Dear Band Parent,

We are thrilled to announce an exciting opportunity for your child to participate in our annual Solo and Ensemble Festival in March. All students have received a hand-picked solo from their director. This music is meant to challenge your child and strengthen their musicianship. All students will be required to learn a solo, but participation in the festival is optional. If your child participates in the festival, they will perform for a judge and be rated on technique, rhythm, dynamics and overall musicianship. Each participant will attain a gold, silver, or bronze medal. If your child does not attend the Festival, they will still perform a solo for their director around the time of the festival.

This year’s festivals will be held at 5 different locations between the hours of 8:00 am and 4:00 pm on Saturday March 7th and Saturday March 14th. The location and date will be displayed once you complete the registration below. Our staff will determine performance times. You will receive your official time and more information in the mail a week or two before the festival. Your child’s performance will last seven minutes but students are expected to arrive 30-45 minutes prior to their scheduled performance time in order to warm-up and familiarize themselves with the festival environment.

The entrance fee of $33 per student covers the expenses for your child’s solo performance including the extra rehearsal time, facility usage, accompanist and judge’s fees. Ensembles, for interested students, will be arranged by your director. There is an additional charge of $5 per student for each ensemble. Your account will be charged the entrance fee of $33.00 on the February bill. Ensemble charges will be added to your March bill. We strongly recommend that all students participate in this event which will further enhance their individual success and enrich their musical development.

Students MUST be registered by Feb. 4th, 2020 at 11:59pm

Additional Solo Festival Details

  • The Solo & Ensemble Festival is not a competition. Every performer will be awarded a gold, silver or bronze medal for their efforts in addition to personalized feedback from the judge.
  • The time commitment involves increased practice time, some extra practice with the director (look for notes from your director), two practices with a piano accompanist (when applicable) and a couple of hours on the day of the festival.
  • Preparation for this performance is well worth the extra time and effort. Students who participate show strong improvement in technique, and general knowledge of music which leads to greater self-confidence.
  • Students do not perform in front of an audience. Solos and Ensembles are played in a private classroom setting before a judge. However, students may invite any family members/supporters who wish to listen.
  • The festival is designed to encourage students to work hard, set long term goals, and gain a sense of accomplishment.
  • Students who participate in the event often emerge as leaders in their school band.

  • If you should have questions or concerns please contact your band director.
