Michael Auz's Bio

Michael Auz

Mr. Michael Auz was only 10 years old when he first took up playing the bass clarinet in the 5th grade band. Growing up in the south suburbs of Chicago, he attended Marian Catholic High School. While there, he continued to play the bass clarinet and participated in the marching band where he was a section leader. During this time, he competed nationally with the band and was a finalist many times. In 2009, Mr. Auz had the honor of taking part in the Tournament of Roses Parade in California with Bands of America. He then went on to receive a bachelor’s degree in music from Western Illinois University. There he played the sousaphone and was a section leader and senior assistant in the marching band. He studied clarinet as his primary instrument but part of a music degree is being proficient in all band, string, and classroom instruments, as well as vocal techniques.

Since graduating college, Mr. Auz has been teaching students of all ages, experience levels, and instruments! Many of his students have division 1 ratings and receive first chair placements. Some have even gone from last to first chair in their band programs! Beyond being a band director and private lesson instructor, Mr. Auz enjoys attending Drum Corp International events, helping out at a band camps, and even designs drill for marching band shows.

Most important to Mr. Auz is that, even if a student chooses not to pursue music as a career, they should still have enjoyed their education and be an advocate for it. Fine arts are so important to students because it teaches them self-expression.
