Mr. Andrew Szymanski was born and raised in Chicago. He received his BA in Instrumental Music Education K-12 from Concordia University in 1992. He has taught music privately for 14 years. Mr. Szymanski plays many instruments, but his primary instrument is oboe. He also enjoys playing the drum set, and hopes to learn bassoon, harp, or bagpipe one day.
Mr. Szymanski’s proudest moment as a band teacher happens annually at the last concert of the year. He sees the eighth graders he has spent five years instructing, and reflects upon how much the students have contributed to the band program.
As his favorite musicians or groups, Mr. Szymanski lists The Beatles, XTC, and Dave Brubeck. In terms of orchestral music, he especially enjoys Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5, and his favorite jazz piece is Brubeck’s “Blue Rondo a la Turk.” Mr. Szymanski listens to “jazz, blues, just about anything I can get my hands on.”
